3X Genetics: Founded To Find A Better Way To Test

3X Genetics develops precision tests for genetic conditions that conventional test methods struggle to diagnose, including repeat expansion disorders (REDs).

Based in Worcester, MA, with a CLIA-certified laboratory in Manchester, NH, we combine AI-driven assay design with rigorous validation to deliver tests that are faster and more precise than existing options while remaining cost-competitive. We partner with biopharma and research institutions to support therapeutic development, and continue to expand our offerings as the science advances.

Our Story

3X Genetics began with a family’s seven-year search for a definitive diagnosis of the muscular and GI issues affecting two of their children.

Kevin Donahue, an experienced engineer and serial entrepreneur, founded 3X Genetics in 2021 to develop purpose-built tests for Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1). That early work laid the foundation for something broader. Five years later, 3X Genetics has developed a platform capable of diagnosing all types of REDs as well as various other genetic diseases.

Our Leadership Team

3X is led by experienced leaders with deep expertise across the medical, scientific, and business aspects of genetic diagnostics. They are supported by a team of specialists in computational biology, laboratory operations, commercial testing and intellectual property. At every level, our entire team is motivated by a shared goal: helping patients who have not yet benefited from advances in genetic medicine.

Careers At 3X

We’re developing technology that could transform genetic diagnostics. Our platform performs targeted, unamplified sequencing of genomic regions that have long resisted conventional analysis, delivering faster results and deeper insights for an entire class of genetic diseases that standard methods routinely miss.

This is foundational work. If you want to help build something that changes how genetic diseases are diagnosed and treated, we’d like to meet you.

We’re a small, focused team based in Worcester, MA, a thriving biotech hub ranked among the top 100 best places to live in the US. We value curiosity, rigor and the drive to solve problems that matter.
